Miners sign four from local tryouts

MESA, ARIZONA –The Mesa Miners professional baseball team held their local tryouts on Saturday, April 16 with Miners manager Les Lancaster signing four players to contracts:š Michael Done (3B), Caleb Maher (1B/OF), Jared Brite (RHP), and Cole Cicatelli (C).

The contracts signed by these players are an invitation to spring training and a chance to make the final 24-man roster.Å¡ Over 100 players turned out at HoHoKam Park for the tryouts which was led by Lancaster, Golden Baseball League's (GBL) Director of Scouting/Player Development Kash Beauchamp, and GBL's Player Consultant Nick Belmonte.Å¡ Also in attendance were Surprise Fightin' Falcons Manager Ozzie Virgil Jr. and San Diego Surf Dawgs Manager Terry Kennedy.

"We are extremely pleased with the number of players that showed up for the tryouts on Saturday," said Lancaster.Å¡ "The four players that we signed stood out from the rest and are expected to make an impact during spring training.Å¡ It is possible that any of these players will make the final roster and contribute during the season."

Twenty-five-year-old switch-hitting third baseman Done, who has three years professional experience with the Baltimore Orioles organization, played the majority of the 2004 season with Class A Frederick (Carolina League).Å¡ In 77 games with Frederick, Done batted .215 with 4 home runs and 26 RBI.Å¡ While with Bluefield (Appalachian League) in 2002, he led the league in walks (54) and finished third in on-base percentage (.473).Å¡ The 5-foot-11, 190-pound infielder was originally selected by the Orioles in the 40th round of the 2001 MLB Draft from the University of Washington.

Maher, 21, split the 2004 season between Class A Cedar Rapids (Midwest League) and Provo (Pioneer League).Å¡ The 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitter collected 10 home runs and 49 RBI in 88 games between the two clubs.Å¡ He was originally selected by the Anaheim Angels in the ninth round of the 2002 MLB Draft.

A hard-throwing right-handed pitcher, Brite attended Kansas State University for two years where he played both baseball and football.Å¡ In seven appearances on the mound in 2004 for KSU, he had a 1.94 ERA.Å¡ Drafted in the 26th round by the Houston Astros in 2004, the 23 year-old was released by them before the start of the 2004 season.Å¡ The Cincinnati Reds signed him in 2005, but he was released during their spring training.Å¡ The 6-foot-1, 186-pounder was ranked among the top 50 baseball prospects in the nation by Baseball America coming out of high school in California.

Cicatelli, a Tempe resident, played college baseball for Stony Brook from 2003 to 2004. In 2004, he hit .241 with 2 home runs and 22 RBI in 53 games. In 43 games during the 2003 season, the right-handed hitting catcher ranked second on the team in home runs (7) and slugging percentage (.550) and third in batting average (.318).Å¡ The 6-foot, 200-pound native of Teaneck, New Jersey began his collegiate baseball career with the New Jersey Institute of Technology and was named the team's Most Valuable Player as a freshman.
