MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have re-signed all-star second baseman Tony Roth for 2009.

Roth finished the 2008 season hitting .290 with five home runs and 25 RBI in 48 games. Heading into the all-star break he was hitting .308 with four home runs and 19 RBI, but injuries limited him to just eight games in the second half of the season.

From May 25 until July 5, Roth reached base safely in 34 consecutive games, the second longest such streak in the Frontier League this past season.

"Tony is really a leader on the field for us," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "He solidifies the middle of our infield defense and does a great job at the top end of our order finding a way to get on base and setting up guys in the middle of the order. It's great to have him back this year."

The Miners also recently announced the return of assistant coach Ron Biga. In his second season with the team, the Chicago native will once again serve as the team's advance scout and assist with player acquisitions.

The Miners will begin the 2009 season in Evansville on Friday, May 22. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 7:05 p.m.
