Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (March 30, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners announce that they have added two pitchers who return to the club after playing for them in 2013 in right-handers Pete Perez and Shane Street. They have also sold the contract of recently-signed pitcher Jarrett Miller to the Baltimore Orioles organization.
Perez comes back to the Miners after spending the 2014 campaign in the Atlanta Braves organization. After finishing his college career as an all-conference pitcher at Tarleton State University (where he was teammates with current Miners pitcher Miguel Ramirez and former Miners hurler Britt Robertshaw), Perez pitched in 27 games for Southern Illinois in 2013. He compiled a 3.03 ERA, and struck out 41 batters while walking only 18 in 38 2/3 innings, earning him the #2 spot on Baseball America's Independent League All-Prospect Team.
He was subsequently signed by the Braves following the season. Perez appeared in 44 games for the Braves' Single-A affiliate in Rome, Georgia last season, finishing 31 games with seven saves. He struck out 59 over 57 2/3 innings, walking only 15 and finishing with a 3.28 ERA.
"Pete had a tremendous rookie season for us in 2013 and an even better season with the Braves last year," Miners manager Mike Pinto said. "We are very excited he chose to return to Southern Illinois."
Street also comes back to the Miners after playing in 18 games with the club in 2013, hitting .206 as a catcher. Last season, however, he converted to a pitcher after showing a strong throwing arm with the Miners. While playing for the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in 2014, he appeared in 29 games, striking out 31 over 29 2/3 innings and walking only 11 while giving up just 17 hits for a 0.944 WHIP in helping Rio Grande Valley to the United League championship.
"We are very happy to be bringing Shane back to the Miners organization," Pinto added. "Being a first-class teammate, Shane has a strong arm and made a great conversion to the pitcher's mound. He now brings a power arm back to the Miners with a year of successful experience."
