
Miners fall to Scorpions again, 8-5

MESA, ARIZONA âThe Yuma Scorpions beat the Mesa Miners 8-5 to earn a split in the four game series at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.
For the third straight game, the Scorpions jumped out to an early lead. In tonight's contest, they scored four runs in the first inning off Mesa starter Tim Kalita. Outfielder Billy Malone hit a 2-run double in the first as Yuma collected four runs on five hits along with one Mesa error.
Kalita settled down after the first inning, giving up no runs in the next four innings. The Miners climbed their way back into the game, tying it at four runs a piece in the sixth inning. RBI singles by Diggz Edwards and Marcus Jensen along with Dustin Kupper's wild pitch aided the comeback.
The Miner's bullpen struggled in relief as Manny Ayala (1-1) allowed four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. The big blow was pinch hitter Larry Pittmon's 2-run double which put Yuma ahead for good. The winning pitcher for the Scorpions was reliever Jared Terrebone (1-0) who pitched 1.1 scoreless innings. Daniel Griffin pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
The Long Beach Armada sails into town tomorrow night to take on the Miners at 6:35 p.m. at HoHokam Park. The scheduled starters are yet to be determined.
