Surprise Fightin' Falcons News Release
Manager Ozzie Virgil Jr. said pitching would be the big question mark for the Surprise Fightin' Falcons this season, but after four games, the Falcons' starting pitching is some of the best in the league so far.
Following the performances of Chris Russ on opening day and Pete Hartmann Saturday night, rookie right-hander David Seccombe turned in six solid innings in Surprise's 6-1 win over Japan Sunday night. It was the Falcons' second straight win by that score over the Bears, a traveling team from Japan.
Seccombe, who briefly played in the Boston Red Sox system, scattered three hits over six innings, stuck out four and walked two. Relievers Eric Estrada and Brian Barnett finished the last three innings, not allowing a run and giving up only three hits.
Offensively, every Falcons starter got a hit, including OF Desi Wilson, who went 3-for-4 with and RBI and a run scored. 1B Ali Modami drove in two runs with a single in the second inning and made two spectacular catches on line drives. The Falcons totaled 13 hits, the second time this season they have been in double-figures in hits.
Surprise ended its first homestand 3-1 and will next travel to Yuma for a three-game series starting Monday. James Beever Jr. is scheduled to start for the Falcons in the first game of the series.
