
Miners fall to Scorpions 9-5

MESA, ARIZONA âThe Mesa Miners lost their first game of the season falling to the Yuma Scorpions 9-5 at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.
The Scorpions scored nine runs on 14 hits with one error while the Miners had five runs on 10 hits and no errors. Yuma jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, led by catcher Jacob Guzman's 2-run home run in the top of the second inning. The first three hitters in the lineup for the Scorpions were a combined 7 for 15 with five runs scored and 2 RBI. Centerfielder Javier Lopez finished the game 4 for 5 with 2 RBI to add to the offense which gave Yuma its first win of the season.
Losing pitcher for the Miners was starter Jason Navarro (0-1) who lasted four innings giving up five runs (4 earned) on eight hits while walking two and striking out four. Miner's reliever Julian Harris struggled in relief giving up four runs on four hits in one inning of work. Scorpion's starter Jorge Perez (1-0) got the win by pitching 5.1 innings, giving up three runs, one walk, and five strikeouts.
The five runs scored by the Miners were the lowest offensive output of the season. Centerfielder Marcus Knight led Mesa, going 3 for 5 with 2 RBI including a solo home run.
The final game of the four game series concludes tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. as Miner's LHP Tim Kalita takes on RHP Dustin Kupper of Yuma.
