Miners Fall Short in Extras against Otters

Marion, IL - The Miners fell short tonight in extra innings as the Evansville Otters defeated the Miners 4-2 in ten innings. Miners closer Max Peterson earned his first loss of the season by giving up two runs in the top of the tenth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Miners starter Brian Fowler threw seven innings, giving up seven hits, two runs, one walk and struck out seven batters.

The Otters took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Miners starter Brian Fowler as Otters first baseman Nick Schwaner hit a two out single for an RBI. The Miners came right back in the bottom of the second inning as catcher Sean Coughlin hit a solo home run to tie it at 1-1. Otters starter Dan Blewett left after 2.1 innings due to injury. Otters reliever Tyree Hayes came in midway through the third inning. He pitched 4.2 innings, striking out four Miners and giving up one run.

The Otters took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning off Fowler when Otters second baseman Taylor Black hit a sacrifice fly. With the game nodded at 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Darian Sandford scored off a double play by Chad Maddox to tie it at 2-2.

The game would head to the top of the tenth inning where the Otters scored two runs off closer Max Peterson to take a 4-2 lead. Otters closer Eric Massingham closed out the game to earn his sixth save and to give the Otters the 4-2 win.

With the loss, the Miners fall to 18-13 on the season and now three games behind Traverse City in the Eastern Division. The Otters improve to 12-19 with the win. The Miners and Otters play game two of the three game set tomorrow. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
