Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, ILL.-The Southern Illinois Miners fell behind from the start as the Joliet Slammers scored five runs in the top of the first inning and continued to score throughout the contest in what was eventually a 12-4 loss at Rent One Park on Friday night, dropping the opener of the three-game weekend series.

Joliet jumped on DYLLON NUERNBERG right away, as after a leadoff single by Charlie White, Melvin Rodriguez hit a two-run homer to left to make it 2-0. The Slammers would get four more hits and a walk off of Nuernberg (6-3) before he was taken out having pitched one-third of an inning. The Miners got a run back in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by NOLAN EARLEY with two outs, making the score 5-1.

DUSTIN BATSON relieved Nuernberg and pitched the next three and two-thirds innings for the Miners, but surrendered three unearned runs in the third to make it 8-1 Joliet as two Miners errors in the frame helped the Slammers tack on. After another run scored for the visitors in the fifth inning, the Miners would get a leadoff double by CRAIG MASSEY in the bottom half, which eventually became a second run on Earley's groundout to make the score 9-2.

Joliet would then score single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings before JULIUS GAINES came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and delivered a ground-rule, two-run double for the final margin.

Joliet finished with 17 total hits in the game, scoring in six of the nine innings in which they batted. The win went to Shane Bryant (4-2), who pitched six innings and allowed two runs for the Slammers, who dropped the Miners to 46-23 while improving their record to 38-31.

The Miners will look to bounce back on Saturday night at 5:05 p.m., as the two teams will finish a previously suspended game from July 21st at Silver Cross Field before playing their regularly-scheduled game after the conclusion of the suspended contest. The second game will be seven innings in length, with rookie right-hander COREY SESSIONS making the start against Slammers southpaw Chris Rice.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
