Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Washington, PA - The Southern Illinois Miners got a career-high performance from Geno Encina on the mound in the series finale on Thursday night against the Washington Wild Things, but were denied a series sweep by a final score of 2-1 in a pitcher's duel at Wild Things Park.
The Miners opened the scoring against Thomas Dorminy (2-1) when Chance Shepard reached second base leading off the second inning on a throwing error by Washington third baseman Mike Hill. Joe Dudek then rapped an RBI single to center field, extending his hit streak to seven in a row and giving the Miners a 1-0 lead.
But the lead would not last long, as Hector Roa hit a one-out solo home run to left to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. In the third, Justin Bohn hit a go-ahead solo shot to left-center field, which gave Washington a 2-1 lead.
Both pitching staffs would hold the other scoreless the rest of the way. Encina (0-2) pitched a career-best seven innings, allowing just two runs on three hits with one walk and a new career-high seven strikeouts to keep Southern Illinois in the game. But Dorminy surrendered just the one run in seven innings himself on three hits. The Miners got the tying run on base in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings against him, but could not push across the run in suffering the road loss.
Dudek finished with two of the Miners' hits in the contest, going 2-for-4 and adding a double as Southern Illinois settled for a two-games-to-one road series victory. Now 6-6 on the season, the Miners continue their road trip with a weekend series against the Joliet Slammers beginning on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Former major leaguer Williams Perez will get the nod in the series opener in his second start for Southern Illinois opposite Joliet right-hander Liam O'Sullivan at Joliet Route 66 Stadium.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's winningest franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in their inaugural season.
