Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, ILL.- The Southern Illinois Miners came up a run short late against the Windy City ThunderBolts on Thursday night at Rent One Park, dropping a 3-2 decision in Marion to drop the series two games to one.
It was a closely-contested, pitcher's duel between JARETT MILLER and Windy City's Jake Fisher all game, as both pitchers went seven strong innings with seven hits allowed and seven strikeouts. Windy City scored first on a double followed by two groundouts in the second inning against Miller (5-3) to take a 1-0 lead, then used a leadoff double and a two-out double in the fourth to extend it to 2-0. The Miners would respond with a run of their own as after STEVE MARINO and NOLAN EARLEY led off with back-to-back singles against Fisher (7-4), Riley Moore sacrificed them to second and third base before EDISON SANCHEZ brought home the run with a grounder to second.
With the score 2-1, it remained that way until the seventh inning, when on two singles by Blair Beck and Charley Thurber, the ThunderBolts got men at the corners with one out. Tim Zier hit a ground ball to Marino at third, and the Miners' captain threw home but Beck was called safe at the plate for what would end up being the winning run.
In the eighth, the Miners chased Fisher with a leadoff double by CRAIG MASSEY and he scored when Marino singled with two outs to make it 3-2.
In the ninth, Sanchez walked to lead off and was pinch-run for by BRENDAN O'BRIEN, but the Miners failed to move him from first, as FRANCISCO ROSARIO struck out on a foul bunt with two strikes and AARON GATES flew out to left. SHANE KENNEDY then hit a line-drive up the middle, but the ball was caught on a dive by the shortstop to end the game.
Marino doubled and went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Kennedy and Earley extended their hitting streaks with one hit apiece to eight and eleven games, respectively, but it was not enough as the Miners dropped the home series.
Southern Illinois next heads out on the road to Schaumburg to open up a three-game series beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m. against the Boomers. BROOKS TRUJILLO will take the hill for Southern Illinois against Boomers' left-hander Gunnar Kines as the Miners start a six-game road trip.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
