East Kentucky Miners News Release

PIKEVILLE, KY. - Following a day off, East Kentucky will return to its home hardwood inside the Expo Center on Wednesday in a non-conference game versus the Rio Grande Valley Silverados. The Miners own a 1-0 career record versus the Texas team. East Kentucky defeated Rio Grande Valley 119-116 in a first-ever meeting on Monday, Nov. 26, 2007. The Miners will look to snap a two-game losing streak against the Silverados. East Kentucky dropped a pair of games to CBA frontrunner Yakama earlier in the week.

"Rio Grande Valley is a good basketball team now," said East Kentucky Coach Kevin Keathley. "The Silverados have made several roster changes and are a much-improved basketball team. Rio Grande Valley has one of the best front lines in the CBA. We want to use our versatility to take advantage of mismatches and run our break as much as possible."

Rio Grande Valley (2-17) underwent a coaching change earlier in the season when Derrick Rowland became head coach, replacing veteran Steve Tucker at the helm of the Silverados franchise. Tucker coached Rio Grande Valley to a 0-10 record during his abbreviated tenure.

Rowland was a longtime CBA player before he became a coach. He was an assistant coach of the Oklahoma Calvary under former NBA player Michael Ray Richardson. Rowland holds several Albany Partoons records. He is fifth on the all-time Albany scoring list and was named to the CBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.

Rio Grande Valley picked up its second win of the season on Thursday, Jan. 3, defeating Oklahoma 120-115. The Silverados handed the Calvary their first home loss.

Tip-off for the East Kentucky-Rio Grande Valley game is set for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for the non-conference matchup remain available.
