Florence, KY - The Southern Illinois Miners fell hard to the Florence Freedom on Sunday night by a final score of 14-2 at UC Health Stadium, losing the series two games to one.
After a scoreless first inning, the Freedom scored three runs against Kurt Heyer in the second inning, and then five more in the third to build an 8-0 lead. They added on two more runs in the fourth inning to stretch their advantage out to 10-0 before the Miners got on the board against Jordan Kraus (5-4).
In the sixth, Kurt Wertz, Jr. kept his bat rolling by hitting a solo home run to right-center field, his second long ball in as many nights, to make it 10-1. But Keivan Berges answered in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer of his own for an 11-1 lead. Three more runs in the seventh inning made the score 14-1, and the Miners got a two-out RBI double by Kyle Davis in the eighth inning for the final margin.
The Miners will look to bounce back at home against the Schaumburg Boomers, with a midweek series at Rent One Park beginning on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Aaron Rozek will pitch for the Miners, while former Southern Illinois right-hander Payton Lobdell will toe the rubber for the Boomers.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's winningest franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
