Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners fell 6-1 to the Traverse City Beach Bums on Sunday night at Wuerfel Park, as the homestanding Beach Bums took the three-game weekend series two games to one by dealing the Miners back-to-back defeats.
The game was scoreless until the third inning, when Jeff DeBlieux doubled off Dan Ludwig (5-1) with one out, then came around to score the game's first run on two straight wild pitches. In the fifth inning, the Beach Bums would score another run on a solo homer by Giancarlo Brugnoni, doubling the advantage to 2-0. In the next inning, Traverse City would plate four more runs, on an RBI double by Steven Patterson and three batters later a two-out, three-run homer by Brugnoni for a 6-0 margin.
Southern Illinois would get a run back in the seventh when Aaron Gates doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a ground ball, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nolan Earley to cut the deficit to 6-1, but that was all the Miners got off of Traverse City right-hander Kramer Champlin (3-4), who went the distance, allowing the lone run on four hits and fanning eight Miners batters without issuing a single walk.
The Miners will look to bounce back when they continue their road trip against the Florence Freedom on the Fourth of July holiday on Monday night at 6:05 p.m. central time, with Josh Kimborowicz getting the nod for the Miners against Florence's Jeremy Gooding.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
