Miners beat Scorpions in GBL opener

MESA, ARIZONA –The Mesa Miners opened their inaugural Golden Baseball League season with an impressive 12-1 victory over the Yuma Scorpions at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.

The crowd of 3,264 saw Miners opening night starter Grant Williams pitch seven shutout innings to gain the first ever win in Mesa Miner's history. Williams allowed just four hits while walking two and striking out four.

The Miners got on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly by centerfielder Marcus Knight. The offense continued in the second inning when the Miners scored five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run by third baseman Michael Done. Scorpion's starter Joe Davenport lasted only 1.2 innings, giving up six runs (all earned) on three hits while walking five and striking out two. Leadoff hitter, Diggz Edwards, went 2 for 2 with four runs scored and an RBI.

The Scorpions lone run came on a solo home run by outfielder Justin Schuda in the ninth inning off reliever Jon Uhl. The Miners finished with 12 runs on six hits with one error, and the Scorpions had one run on five hits and one error.

Game two of the series continues tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. at HoHoKam Park. The scheduled starters are LHP Chris Marini for the Miners and RHP Rusty Meacham for the Scorpions.
