MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The intensity of an in-state rivalry was all too apparent Friday night as the Milwaukee Iron and the Green Bay Blizzard squared off at the Bradley Center for their second matchup of the season.
After both teams scored 21 points in the first quarter, Green Bay went on an explosive 65-21 run to seal the win, 86-42, and take a 2-0 lead in the three-game series between the teams this season. With the win, the Blizzard improved to 8-5 overall, while the Iron dropped to 5-8.
The teams got off to a strenuous start, going back and forth in scoring, and tying the game three times. Both teams ended the first quarter with three touchdowns apiece and the score knotted at 21. Milwaukee was first on the scoreboard as quarterback Todd Hammel found WR Antoine Burns on a 38-yard throw in the first two minutes of play.
Hammel completed 23-of-38 passes with 344 yards, and four touchdowns. Burns finished the game with a team-high 10 catches and two touchdowns.
Green Bay took over in the second quarter outscoring Milwaukee 28-7 to end the frame up by 21 points at 49-28. After three consecutive touchdowns by the Blizzard, including a 3-yard interception return by Shadrack Okoebor, the Iron broke their scoring drought with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Hammel to WR Scott Burnoski. Burnoski finished the game with five catches and 103 yards. Green Bay capped the quarter off with their seventh TD of the night on a 16-yard pass from Blizzard quarterback Gino Guidugli. Guidugli went 22-for-25 in the game with five touchdowns and 290 yards.
Green Bay's tenacity carried over into the third quarter as the Blizzard held the Iron scoreless in the heat of battle, and extended their lead to 30 points, 58-28.
The Blizzard quickly extended that lead to 72-28 in the fourth quarter as WR Anthony Crissinger-Hill hauled in two passes within the first five minutes. Milwaukee FB Tyre Young ran for a 3-yard touchdown, and Burns added another six points at the 2:07 mark, but it wasn't enough to keep the Iron in the game.
