(Moncton, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats won their second straight road game, holding on to defeat the Moncton Miracles, 90-87 at the Moncton Coliseum.
The Mill Rats improve to 4-2 on the season and 4-1 on the road. Another road test awaits on Sunday at the Metro Centre as the 0-5 Halifax Rainmen are gearing up to try and get their first win.
Showcasing the same three guard attack as last night in Charlottetown, the Mill Rats raced out to a 32-18 first quarter lead. By the start of the fourth quarter they had increased the 14 point lead by one to 15, at 80-65.
In the fourth quarter the offense stalled, and the Miracles made a run at Saint John. They managed to cut the lead down to 86-83 with under 1 minute to go. But a steal followed by a Doug Herring breakout slam dunk pushed the lead to 88-83 with 37 seconds remaining. The Miracles, in desperation-mode, scored on a put back layup with 9 seconds remaining.
Anthony Anderson, who is shooting 100% from the foul line this season, calmly sunk two free throws to make it 90-85, and Oliver McNally's jumper at the buzzer banked harmlessly in for the final margin.
Anderson led the Mill Rats in the scoring column with 25, Doug Herring in his second start had 23, Will Blalock 13, and Jermaine Blackburn 10. Tyrone Levett scored 8 points but hauled down 13 rebounds. Trayvon Lathan had 23 for the Miracles, who drop to 2-4 on the season.
The Mill Rats head to Halifax on Sunday for a 2pm tip off against the Rainmen at the Metro Centre.
Their next home games are Saturday November 23rd against the Brampton A's and the 24th against the Moncton Miracles.
