Saint John Riptide News Release

(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats finally solved the Halifax Rainmen puzzle that's been plaguing them for four straight games with a big come from behind win, 105-104, at Harbour Station.

After a decent first quarter that found the Mill Rats trailing by a slight edge of 23-20, the Rainmen took control in the second quarter. Saint John committed a high number of unforced turnovers that resulted in a 16-4 Rainmen run to open up a 15 point lead at the 7 minute mark.

And then Johnny Mayhane caught fire. The former Miracle launched a barrage of threes from the same corner that sparked a 25-12 run to close within 51-49 at the half.

Again the Rainmen opened the quarter on a 9-2 run off turnovers to lead 60-51. Saint John again got back in the game on timely threes and took a 1-point lead on two free throws by Anthony Anderson at 65-64. Once again the resilient crew from Nova Scotia posted an lead, 82-75 heading into the fourth.

Would the Mill Rats crumble and give in to the Rainmen full court pressure or would they respond?

Trailing 89-78 with 10 minutes to play, the Mill Rats dug in deep. Raheem Singleton and Anthony Anderson continued to attack the basket. Power forward Kenny Jones cleaned up the misses and scored inside. And Mayhane was pure magic drilling another three pointer in the run to regain the lead.

Anderson's two free throws gave Saint John a 105-103 lead with 1 minute remaining. Seiya Ando made only 1 of 2 at the line, and the Mill Rats lead 105-104 with 46 seconds left. After a miss, Kevin Young's turnover was secured and Saint John preserved the win.

"Things don't always go exactly our way all the time, for example we committed alot of costly turnovers," said Mill Rats Head Coach Julian King. "But what I really liked to see was the guys never quit, they laid it on the line, and tonight we came out with a good result against and really good team."

Anthony Anderson led Saint John with 24 points, Johnny Mayhane scored 23 on 7-8 three point shooting, Kenny Jones 19, Raheem Singleton 13, and Tyrone Levett 10. The Mill Rats were 11-22 from three point range, a stat that had been lacking during the losing streak. Saint John also outrebounded the Rainmen 38-32.

Emmanuel Jones led Halifax with 23 points.

With the win snapping a six-game losing streak, the Mill Rats improve to 5-11 and the Rainmen drop to 7-6.
