Saint John Riptide News Release

(Saint John, NB): The newly re-tooled Saint John Mill Rats put together a much stronger effort than in the previous matchups with the Halifax Rainmen and rallied to tie the game late, but the Rainmen escaped in dramatic fashion 106-104 in the waning seconds.

"We have alot to work on with integrating the new guys into the lineup, but I saw alot of positive things tonight," said Mill Rats Head Coach Julian King. "The best thing was we didn't gave up, we had each other's back, and we fought."

This was the debut of Johnny Mayhane and Jeremy Williams, and the return of Raheem "Radio" Singleton. Mayhane and Singleton wasted no time putting their stamp on the game with 14 and 12 points respectively in the first half. All three arrived to the Port City after midnight last night. Tyrone Levett also returned from injured reserve.

While the Mill Rats were familiarizing with each other, the Rainmen grabbed a 10-point lead in the second quarter, before the Mill Rats rallied and closed to within 55-51 at the half.

In the 3rd quarter Saint John tied the game 73-73 but the Rainmen once again pulled ahead 79-73 to close the quarter.

In the final stanza, the Rainmen rebuilt and 11-point lead but the Mill Rats continued to fight and claw. Kenny Jones scored to tie the game at 102, and the Mill Rats got a stop, but a costly inbounds turnover with 42 seconds left gave the Rainmen a 104-102 lead. Kenny Jones was fouled and made both free throws to tie the game at 104 all. Kevin Young made a driving layup with 12 seconds left and the Mill Rats worked the final possession but did not get a clean shot off to win or tie the game as time expired.

Anthony Anderson scored 28, Kenny Jones 27, Raheem Singleton 17, and Johnny Mayhane 14. Sefton Barrett led Halifax with 19.

The Mill Rats fall to 4-9 and the Rainmen improve to 6 -5. Saint John heads to Halifax next Friday and then both teams return the next day to Harbour Station for another matchup.
