Saint John Riptide News Release
SAINT JOHN, N.B. - The Saint John Mill Rats visited the Eastlink Centre on Friday night to take on the Island Storm in the first of home-and-home series. It was the home side who came out on top beating the Mill Rats by four points, 120-116.
"We are facing a very good, well coached opponent," said Mill Rats Head Coach Rob Spon. "Our focus was there, guys were dialed in, and they came through again in crunch time. We also took great care of the ball and moved it well."
Saint John began the game with a pair of buckets and jumped ahead 4-0. However, it didn't last long as the home side rallied back and took control for the rest of the opening quarter. The Storm lead 32-24 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter the Mill Rats began to find their stride bringing the game to within as little as one point. Both teams scored 30 points in the quarter and the Island Storm continued to lead by eight heading into the locker room. The score was 62-54 at the half.
Saint John clawed back in the third quarter as they outscored the Storm 31-28. A bizarre situation in the middle part of the quarter where several technical fouls were handed out sent Anthony Anderson to the dressing room where he would remain the rest of the way. Surely the Mill Rats would miss him later on in the game. The home town Storm had a 90-85 lead going into the final stretch.
Once again picking up 31 points in the fourth quarter, the Mill Rats kept on pushing and tied the game with 5:54 to play, 101-101. The Storm would keep at it and never let the visitors take a lead. Despite him picking up 22 points, Anthony Anderson could do nothing as his Mill Rats struggled to complete a comeback and ultimately fell by four points.
Saint John drops their record to 21-13 on the season while the Storm climb to 11-22. The two teams will tango again tomorrow in Saint John at 7:00 PM.
Anthony Anderson led Saint John with 22 points and 6 assists. Doug Herring Jr added 21 points while Gabe Freeman finished with 17. Rashad Whack lead the Storm with 18 points.
The Mill Rats are back in Harbour Station next tomorrow night at 7PM to face this same Island Storm team
