New York Power News Release
NEW YORK - U.S. Soccer has announced its finalists for their first ever "best of" awards, included in them in two separate categories is New York Power Co-Captain Tiffeny Milbrett. Milbrett appears as a finalist for the "Best U.S. Goal" and also for "Best U.S. Single Game Performance."
U.S. Soccer Federation has created the series of 10 awards that will honor the standout performances of the calendar year in American soccer and make up the first annual U.S. Soccer "Best of ¬Â¦" Series.
Milbrett, finished the U.S. Women's National Team victory in the Women's Gold Cup with the MVP honors by scoring seven goals in 180 minutes played in the tournament, which included a five-goal performance against Panama. Her goals in that game came in the third, fifth, ninth, 22nd and 34th minutes of the match - of which she is nominated for the "Best U.S. Single Game Performance."
Milbrett's "Best U.S. Goal" nomination came from a November 9 match versus Canada as Aly Wagner, who played a ball in the path of Kristine Lilly on the left wing. Lilly dribbled right at Candace Chapman, perhaps Canada's fastest player, beating her to the outside and creating enough room to whip a cross into the middle. Milbrett was lurking behind defender Silvana Burtini at the top of the six-yard box, but timed her run perfectly to dart in front of the Canadian left back and hit a stunning first time volley with her left foot, sending the ball rocketing over goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc and into the roof of the net to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead in the Women's Gold Cup Final.
"Best U.S. Goal," is awarded to the best goal scored by a U.S. National Team player - including the full and all youth levels - in an international match played this year. But aside from being a spectacular goal from the technical angle, the importance of the match in which it was scored weighed heavily.. Other finalists in this category listed in chronological order of performance are: Brian McBride (MNT), Clint Mathis (MNT), Landon Donovan (MNT), Lindsay Tarpley (U19 WNT) and Mia Hamm (WNT).
"Best U.S. Single Game Performance" (Player) - is awarded to the one U.S. National Team player who took the team on his or her shoulders and put their respective team in position to win with their outstanding, if not dominating, individual performance. As with the award for Best Goal, the seven finalists were determined with special consideration given to the importance of the match in which the noteworthy performance occurred. Other finalists in this category listed in chronological order of performance are: Brain McBride (MNT), Brad Friedel (MNT), Landon Donovan (MNT), Claudio Reyna (MNT), Tony Sanneh (MNT) and Mia Hamm (WNT).
In addition to Best U.S. Goal and Best U.S. Single Game Performance, the eight other categories which make up U.S. Soccer's "Best Of" awards are: Best Soccer Bar, Best Soccer Stadium, Best Soccer Store, Best Soccer Fans, Best U.S. Crowd, Best In-Game Promotion, Best Crowd, Best Single Game Performance (Team), and Best Place to Watch the World Cup From the U.S. Fans can vote for the "Best of" awards online at www.ussoccer.com until December 31, 2002.
