
Milbrett Looks to Retain U.S. Soccer/Chevrolet Female Athlete of the Year Award

New York, NY - New York Power (WUSA) forward Tiffeny Milbrett was named as one of the seven finalists for the 2002 U.S. Soccer/Chevrolet Female Athlete of the Year Award. Milbrett will look to win the award for the third consecutive year. She became the third U.S. women's player to win consecutive U.S. Soccer/Chevrolet Female Athlete of the Year awards when she was honored last year and in 2000.
Milbrett had another outstanding soccer season, leading the Power in scoring with 28 points, which included 10 goals and eight assists. A native of Portland, OR, the 5-2 forward played a major role in the U.S. qualifying for the 2003 Women's World Cup. She finished tied for second on the National Team in scoring with nine goals to go along with six assists for 24 points. Seven of those nine goals came in the 2002 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, for which she was named Tournament MVP. Milbrett tied a WNT record with five goals in one game, including a natural hat trick in the first nine minutes, in a 9-0 win over Panama on Nov. 2, for which she is nominated for Best Game Performance (Player). She then went on to score the first goal in the 2-1 overtime win over Canada in the Women's Gold Cup final, which is nominated for Best U.S. Goal.
Milbrett won the 2001 U.S. Soccer/Chevrolet Female Athlete of the Year award after her WUSA MVP performance, leading the league in scoring with 35 points, which included 16 goals and three assists. The 16 goals scored also topped the WUSA. Milbrett had the longest goal-scoring streak in the league, scoring a goal in five consecutive games.
She won her first U.S. Soccer/Chevrolet Female Athlete of the Year Award in 2000, after being third on the U.S. National team in scoring with 15 goals and nine assists and leading the way with three goals at the 2000 Olympics.
The award is part of the annual year-end honors giving to the U.S. Soccer Female, Male, Young Female and Young Male Athletes of the Year. Online votes will be tallied and will be equivalent to 50 percent of the total votes, while 100 votes will be compiled from members of the national media and U.S. Soccer representatives.
