Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) - New Mississippi RiverKings' coach Kevin Kaminski continues working to fill out his 2008-09 Central Hockey League roster with the acquisition of center Mike Tuomi. The rights to the 23-year old native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada were acquired from the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and he has now been signed on for the upcoming campaign.
The right-handed shooting Tuomi split time between the Killer Bees and Pensacola of the ECHL last year, with the majority of his time being spent with Rio Grande Valley. In 45 appearances with RGV, Mike scored 11 goals and added 13 assists for 24 points with 37 penalty minutes. Three of Tuomi's goals were scored on the power play and one was a game-winner. He was third among active players on the RGV roster at the end of the season in shooting percentage at .124.
Mike joined the Killer Bees in December and promptly contributed with assists in his first three games. Tuomi also started the 2008 portion of the season strong with two goals and four points in the first three contests of the New Year.
With Pensacola of the ECHL last season, Tuomi scored three goals and added an assist in 12 games, before being acquired by Rio Grande Valley.
In 2006, Tuomi started his professional career in the Southern Professional Hockey League with Knoxville, scoring 31 goals and adding 43 assists for 74 points with 86 penalty minutes. Mike received the SPHL Player of the Month award in December, 2006 and for the season was the SPHL's second-leading rookie point producer. Mike was an all-rookie team selection and his plus-36 rating was the third-best in the SPHL.
Prior to the start of his professional career, Mike spent five seasons between the major junior Ontario Hockey League at Barrie, Peterborough, and Kitchener, and the Junior "A" Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League at Aurora and Bramalea.
RiverKings' Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski is expecting big things from his new forward. "We look for Mike to push the number one center man all year long," Kaminski said. "He is a natural talent, has the skating, shot and skill to be at the next level."
Kaminski continued, "Mike needs to come into camp with 'confidence', energy, and show us what he has to offer. We look for Mike to have a huge year and help bring our team success in Mississippi."
