Yuma Scorpions News Release
(Yuma, AZ. November 16, 2006) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that former Los Angeles Dodger outfielder/first baseman Mike Marshall has been selected to be the new manager for the Yuma Scorpions. Marshall replaces Benny Castillo who was recently signed by the Detroit Tigers to manage in their farm system.
"We are excited to add a manager with the tremendous playing and coaching experience that Mike has," said Jason Matlock, General Manager of the Yuma Scorpions. "I have no doubts that he will put a very competitive team on the field, but I'm even more impressed with his eagerness to work within the community with youth sports, charitable organizations, our business partners, and other Yuma groups that we interact with."
Marshall enjoyed a spectacular playing career in professional baseball after being drafted in the 6th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers out of Buffalo Grove High School in Illinois. In five seasons in the minors, he never hit under .324 and was named Minor League Player of the Year in 1981 for his Triple Crown winning season in the Pacific Coast League (AAA) for the Albuquerque Dukes. He joined the Dodgers late in 1981 and became a fixture in their starting lineup for the rest of the decade. In his 11-year major league career, he appeared in the playoffs five seasons including winning the World Series with the 1988 Dodgers, was selected as a National League All-Star in 1984, was in the Top 15 in MVP voting in 1985, and twice finished in the Top 10 in Home Runs and RBIs in the National League before ending his career with the California Angels in 1991. In the late 1990s, he turned to coaching and managing in the independent professional leagues as he held the positions of Player/Manager for the Schaumburg Flyers of the Northern League, Manager and Manager/GM of the Albany Diamond Dogs of the NorthEast League, and manager of the El Paso Diablos of the American Association. In addition, he served two years as Vice President of Operations for the Northern League.
"Mike is one of the premier managers in independent professional baseball," said GBL Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. "He brings top level playing, managerial, and business skills that will be of great value to the Yuma Scorpions. We are thrilled to have him the league."
