Boston Cannons News Release

BOSTON, MA - Major League Lacrosse has announced that Cannons' midfielder Josh Hawkins earned the Week 10 Warrior Defensive Player of the Week honors following a strong defensive performance and a three goal performance in the Cannons 17-14 win over the Bayhawks last Thursday night.

The win snapped Boston's two game skid as Hawkins was a key catalyst to both the offense and the defense. Hawkins tied season highs with three goals and six ground balls.

Not only did Hawkins tally his second hat trick of the season, but he was tasked with the responsibility of covering the No. one college draft pick, Myles Jones for the second time this season. Hawkins rose to the occasion and limited the high scoring and explosive midfielder to only a goal during the contest. Hawkins caused two big turnovers leading to Cannons goals at crucial points of the game.

Earlier this year, Hawkins covered the midfielder for the first time when Jones was a member of Atlanta Blaze. Jones was limited once more by Hawkins, tallying two goals and an assist. The Cannons went onto win by a final of 21-12 and Hawkins picked up two ground balls.

Hawkins performance on Thursday night validated the All-Star Game selection he received earlier in the week. While he has primarily been known for his defense, his play on the face-off wings and in the Cannons transition game has gained him notoriety this season. With four regular season games remaining, Hawkins already has career highs in goals (8), assists (3), points (11) and ground balls (39).

It marks the first time in Hawkins' career that he has received the Warrior Defensive Player of the Week honors.

"Josh has been an instrumental piece of our success as a defensive midfielder. His ability to push the ball in transition and off of face-offs has been huge for us. He's been a key leader for the Cannons organization on and off the field," said Head Coach Sean Quirk.

Hawkins and the Cannons will be back in action this weekend on Saturday, July 2 as Boston travels to Rochester to face the Rattlers at 5:00 p.m. The game will be aired live on the Lax Sports Network.
