PHOENIX, Ariz. - Olympic Medalist/6-Time World Champion/Hall of Fame Ring Legend Michael Carbajal will serve as Honorary Captain for Arizona United Soccer Club when it meets the Mexican National Under-20 team on Sunday, April 17, at Peoria Sports Complex.
"As a native Arizonan of Mexican descent, I am honored to represent Arizona's only professional soccer team at this great match," Carbajal said. "Some of my most memorable World Championship Title fights were in Mexico and against Mexican fighters. I know the passion of Mexican fans for El Tri."
Known as Manitas de Piedra, Carbajal is the most decorated boxer to come out of Arizona. After graciously accepting the controversial Silver Medal in the 1988 Olympics, critics thought he should have been one tier up accepting the Gold, Carbajal went on to have a legendary professional career, becoming a Six-Time Light Flyweight World Champion. In 1993, he was named pound for pound champion and was also named Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine. His stellar success in the ring brought attention to the lighter weight classes as he was the first flyweight to win a million dollar purse, a pioneer, paving the way for the lighter weight classes. In 2006, he was inducted into the prestigious International Boxing Hall of Fame.
"We're excited that Michael Carbajal will serve as Honorary Captain for our match against the Mexican National Under-20 squad," Arizona United SC owner Kyle Eng said. "Michael was a champion whose popularity transcended international borders. His tenacity, toughness and fighting spirit are great examples for our young players."
Tickets for the match are just $10 and children 12 and under get in for free. The match will mark Arizona United SC's return to Peoria, where it played its debut season in 2014. Arizona United SC's United Soccer League (USL) home opener will be on Saturday, April 30, against Portland Timbers 2. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.arizonaunited.com.
