June 19, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release
Miami, Florida June 19, 2009- Miami FC will return to Middlefield Cheese Stadium to face the USL-2 Champions, Cleveland City Stars, Saturday June 20th. The Blues came away with a dramatic 2-1 victory on Thursday night with two second half goals and a penalty kick save in extra time, securing three crucial points in the USL standings.
"It's hard to beat a team three times, but with the way our team has been playing, I think we can make it happen. We are playing team soccer, and it's starting to show in the results. Hopefully we can continue to get some positive results on the road," said general manager, Luiz Muzzi.
This will be the third time these two franchises meet. Miami FC leads the young rivalry with two wins. The Blues also beat the City Stars 3-1 on opening night at Lockhart Stadium. Diego Serna turned in a wonderful performance that earned him USL Player of the Week honors. Last night, the team beat the Stars with an overall strong team performance. The trio of Leo Inacio Nunes, Orlando Bueso, and Paulo Jr., proved to be too much for the Cleveland defense.
The City Stars won the 2008 USL-2 Championship and have fortified their roster with a nucleus of young players. Joshua Boateng, a 22 year old striker that hails from Ghana, leads the team with three goals. Ricardo Pierre Louis is a seasoned veteran with the Haitian National team with 26 appearances; he is also only 22 years old. Cleveland is currently in 10th place and has a 1-3-1 record at home.
The Blues will travel to Saputo Stadium on June 23rd to face the Montreal Impact. Miami FC beat the Impact at FIU stadium 2-1 on April 24th. Pat Hannigan had a late penalty kick save in that game that secured the victory. Miami FC returns home to play the now traditional Fourth of July game against the Puerto Rico Islanders. This game will be played at FIU Stadium and will include a fireworks extravaganza immediately after the game.
