MIAMI May 26, 2010, - Miami FC was as unable to overcome a two-goal disadvantage in the second half despite a number of offensive opportunities in a 3-1 loss to the Austin Aztex on a rainy night at Lockhart Stadium, ending a run of six straight games without losing a game. The Blues will look to bounce back on the road against the Puerto Rico Islanders on June 2.
"It's about being consistent and we were a bit flat in the first half," Miami FC head coach Victor Pastora said. "We will be prepared for Puerto Rico and we will go after it for those away games. This game is over and now we are moving on."
Austin struck first with a booming shot by Yordany Alvarez from 40 yards out that got past a diving Caleb Patterson to give the Aztex the lead in the 10th minute.
The Aztex added another goal in the 27th minute after a cross in the goal box was accidentally deflected by Kyle Veris into the back of the net to put Miami FC behind 2-0.
The Blues broke through late in the half as Paulo Araujo Jr. broke free after receiving a nice feed from Abe Thompson, putting a shot past Austin goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo to cut the lead in half in the 39th minute for his fourth goal of the season.
Less than 40 seconds later, the Aztex were right back on the attack and Eddie Johnson scored a goal after fielding a rebound on a shot that bounced off Patterson who was left out of position.
The Blues went into the locker room at half time trailing 3-1 and came out aggressive in the second half, looking to cut into the Aztex lead early on in the half.
The Blues had a golden opportunity in the 73rd minute when Christian Gomez downed a header in the box and created a chance for Thompson, but the forward was unable to get a clean shot on goal as the ball was lifted away from Austin territory.
A minute later, Edward Santeliz fired shot on goal that bounced off Gallardo and landed at Thompson's feet, who was able to get his own shot off from point blank range, but his ball was blocked by the Aztex goalkeeper, keeping the Blues with their lone goal.
Thompson would get another opportunity to cut into the deficit with header off of a corner kick in the 83rd minute but the shot was stopped by Gallardo, and proved to be the final quality scoring opportunity for the Blues in the game.
