Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release

Miami, FL. June 14, 2009 - Miami FC (3-5-1) earned a crucial 3 points at Lockhart Stadium this Sunday night. The Blues beat the expansion Austin Aztex winning their second game at Lockhart Stadium. Both Diego Serna and Connally Edozien scored helping the team end a three game home winless streak. Miami FC will now face the first place Charleston Battery on Tuesday night for the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at Tropical Park. 8PM -FREE ADMISSION.

The Blues started the game with a clear opportunity to get on the scoreboard. Alen Marcina broke through the Aztex back line in front of the 18-yard box. Although he had a streaking Diego Serna he chose to shoot the ball sending the shot a wide right. Seven minutes later Marcina would connect the through ball to Serna, this time Serna hit the post keeping the score 0-0.

That would not be the last time Serna hit the post. After a foul on Brazilian striker Paulo Araujo Jr. by Aztex defender Lyle Adams the referee awarded Miami FC with a penalty kick. Diego Serna hit the post again, this time hitting the cross bar.

Miami FC continued to dominate the match. After a series of short passes Connally Edozien was found to be offside's. On the ensuing free kick Sam Reynolds inadvertently kicked the ball straight to Diego Serna. Serna would finish the one-on-one and end a 272 minute home scoreless streak.

Paulo Jr., or Piaui, as he is known in his native Brazil, continued to dictate the right flank. After breaking down his defender, Piaui precisely crossed the ball to forward Connally Edozien who pushed the ball towards the back of the net making the score 2-0.

The second half proved to be a game mostly fought in the midfield. The Aztex looked to be a bit more offensive subbing defender Lyle Adams for midfielder AJ Godbolt, but the Blues didn't stop attacking. Towards the end of the second half Orlando Bueso left a good ball for Connally Edozien, who tried to break down his defender but missed his opportunity for his second goal.

The Aztex had an excellent chance at the end of the second half. Yordan Alvarez made a great turn on the right flank and crossed the ball to Godbolt who unleashed a violent shot that was blocked by Pat Hannigan.

"We played well; it feels good to get a victory at home after such a long time. The team is playing better and it seems like they are playing harder. I just hope that people come out on Tuesday to Tropical Park to watch the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. We play the best team in the USL, the Charleston Battery. It's going to be a hard fought game but the team is playing a lot better," said general manager Luiz Muzzi.

The Blues will face the Charleston Battery for the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at Tropical Park at 8pm. If the Blues beat the battery they will host the MLS side of Chivas USA. Admission will be free to the public.
