Miami, Florida, March 24, 2010 - Miami FC announced Thursday the signing of former MLS MVP, Christian Gomez. The Argentine midfielder spent last season with DC United where he won an MLS Cup in 2004. Terms of the signing were not disclosed.
"This is one of the most significant signings in the history of the club. Gomez is a player with a lot of experience, and a lot of talent. He has the ability to change the game with one play. He continues the tradition of great players that have been a part of the Miami FC family - Romario, and Zinho have left their imprint on this club, and we are excited to see what Christian can do, "said director of Soccer Fernando Clavijo.
Gomez began his career in his native Argentina, at only 17 years old he made his debut with Nueva Chicago. After playing for some of the biggest clubs in Argentina, he found his way to DC United of the MLS, where he played alongside the likes of Jaime Moreno and Ben Olsen. After being tapped to replace the legendary Marco Etcheverry, Gomez went on to one of the most prolific carriers in the history of the MLS. In 2005 he netted 11 goals and added nine assists. Gomez is a four-time MLS All Star, and was named the league's most valuable player for the 2006 season, when he scored 14 goals and contributed 11 assists. He helped DC United capture the MLS Supporters Shield for best regular season record in both 2006 and 2007.
The Blues will travel to Fort Myers to square off with Florida Gulf Coast University at the FGCU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 6pm on Sunday March 28th. Miami FC currently holds a 3-1 record in preseason action.
