Miami FC unveiled their complete roster today at their first Media Day of the season at Lockhart Stadium. Miami FC will host a second Media Day next Wednesday, April 22nd at FIU Stadium. Details will follow.
After a light practice, Miami FC's president, Aaron Davidson addressed the media and players, "What can I say? We did it! Against many people's predictions and expectations, we are alive and kicking...literally...and heading into our fourth season. As you well-know, in 2009 Miami FC will truly become South Florida's team playing in Broward and Dade Counties....in Ft. Lauderdale and in Miami...at the two best soccer stadiums in South Florida - Lockhart and FIU. "
The Media Day served as a kick-off for Miami FC's 2009 regular season opener this Saturday at 8PM at Lockhart Stadium when they will play their first match ever in Broward County taking on the Cleveland City Stars, 2008 USL-2 Champions. As part of the festivities, the Blues announced that Ft. Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler will welcome professional soccer back to Lockhart Stadium.
Miami FC will also pay tribute to the glorious history of professional soccer in South Florida by bringing together legends from the two most significant professional soccer teams which preceded Miami FC in the region: the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers and the Miami Fusion. Teofilo "Nene" Cubillas, one of the top soccer players in history and leading scorer in the history of the Strikers will represent the Strikers on the field during the ceremonial first kick. He will be joined by Striker teammate Ray Hudson, who led the team in assists and more recently coached the Miami Fusion in 2000 and during their final season (2001) when he led them to the MLS regular season Supporter's Shield and semi-finals of the playoffs. To complete the bridge between the Strikers, Fusion and Miami FC, Diego Serna, the leading scorer in the history of the Fusion, and starting forward for Miami FC, will join Cubillas and Hudson at mid-field to kick off Miami FC's 2009 season.
Miami FC will also be hosting over a dozen local youth teams, and PowerAde will present the "PowerAde Penalty Shootout" at halftime.
