Miami FC Acquires Jeff Caldwell on Emergency Loan
November 6, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Miami FC News Release
MIAMI - Miami FC announced on Friday it had acquired goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell from Hartford Athletic on an emergency loan ahead of its game against Louisville City FC on Saturday night at Lynn Family Stadium in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals of the 2021 USL Championship Playoffs, presented by TwinSpires. The emergency loan followed an injury to Miami FC backup goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre, leaving the club with only starter Connor Sparrow available for selection.
Miami FC formally petitioned the league to register an emergency goalkeeper pursuant to the league's Emergency Goalkeeper Exemption for the playoffs. This petition was approved by the league's Compliance and Registration Departments.
Under league rules, after the Roster Freeze date, if a club is reduced to a single available and healthy goalkeeper, that club may petition the league to register an emergency goalkeeper. The subsequent registration will be permitted until such time as one or more of the originally rostered goalkeepers becomes available and healthy.
Caldwell recorded 108 saves and nine shutouts in 30 appearances for Hartford this season, finishing second in the league to Las Vegas Lights FC's Alex Rando in total saves. The 25-year-old had joined the Athletic this season after beginning his professional career with Major League Soccer's New York City FC and set a Championship single-season record with five penalty kick saves in nine penalties faced.
