North Carolina Courage
The North Carolina Courage clinched a playoff berth by defeating the Houston Dash 1-0 in front of 4,943 fans at WakeMed Soccer Park Tuesday evening. Sam Mewis connected on a penalty kick goal in the 87th minute that won the game.
"It wasn't one of our great performances," North Carolina Courage head coach Paul Riley said. "We were a little fatigued with our fourth game in 10 days. We looked a little bit tired and sluggish, especially in the midfield. The last 25 minutes of the first half we were really good ... In the second half, we pinned them in but we didn't play great."
Before the game, Riley said Mewis would take a penalty kick if needed in the game. "Paul had confidence in me to step up and take it," said Mewis. "I had been practicing them for the World Cup, and I felt like I was in a good position to take it."
Of all things Mewis' sister, Houston Dash defender Kristie Mewis, committed the foul that caused the penalty kick.
"I give Houston a lot of credit, I think my sister had a great game," said Mewis. "I'm really proud of her and everything she accomplished this season, coming back from her torn ACL. I actually didn't get a good look at the foul; I'm sure she is sad so I feel for her, too."
Mewis. 26, also played on the United States national team that won the Women's World Cup.
