Western New York Flash News Release
ELMA, N.Y. - U.S. Soccer released its 23-player roster this afternoon including WNY Flash's Samantha Mewis and Jaelene Hinkle.
The U.S. will take on Colombia in East Hartford, Conn. on April 6 (7 p.m. ET on FS1) and again in Chester, Pa. on April 10 (2 p.m. ET on ESPN).
Hinkle received her first call up last year after a strong rookie season for the WNY Flash. The defender was one of two rookies to play all 1,800 minutes in 2015 NWSL regular season play. She earned her first cap against Brazil in a Victory Tour match, subbing in during the second half to help the team come out with a 1-1 tie. The Texas Tech product has earned eight total caps with the U.S. Women's National Team.
"It's an honor every time I get called into camp," said Hinkle. "I'm always excited to play with the national team, and I love having the opportunity to represent my country."
Mewis, a finalist for 2015 NWSL Rookie of the Year, is coming off a strong showing at the inaugural She Believes Cup. Mewis scored the game-winning goal to put the U.S. up 2-1 against Germany in the final of the tournament. The midfielder has earned eight caps for the senior national team, but has played extensively on the youth international level. The 22-year-old UCLA alumna has scored two goals for her country.
The Western New York Flash will open the 2016 NWSL season on Saturday, April 16 at reigning champion, FC Kansas City. The WNY Flash will begin its home campaign on Friday, April 29 against the Washington Spirit at Sahlen's Stadium.
