Mets mash Miracle 12-2 in series opener
August 24, 2009 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS -- Perhaps exacting revenge for a 19-4 Miracle victory on May 14 at Tradition Field, the St. Lucie Mets used a seven-run ninth inning in cruising to a 12-2 blowout of the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium.
David Bromberg (12-3) took his third loss of the season after allowing just two earned runs on three hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out seven. Mike Allen surrendered three earned in one inning, Henry Arias gave up five earned in one inning plus, and Matt Williams, who had thrown two scoreless innings the night before at Port Charlotte, surrendered one earned, two total, in the ninth inning.
The Mets came in as the league's most powerful team with 18 more homers on the season than the second-place club, Clearwater. Sure enough, Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Brahiam Maldonado each launched one in the ninth inning. Both Mets also pulled into a three-way tie with the Miracle's Chris Parmelee for the league lead of 16 homers.
Only Nieuwenhuis had a multi-hit game for the visitors as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a homer, three runs, and two RBI on the same day he was named Florida State League Player of the Week.
Tyler Robertson will look to even the series at one a piece on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
