
Mesa rallies from 8 down to beat Yuma 11-9

MESA, ARIZONA âThe Mesa Miners continued their winning ways to start the season by rallying to beat the Yuma Scorpions 11-9 at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.
The Scorpions jumped to a 9-1 lead in the sixth inning as Miner's starter, Chris Marini, lasted only three innings in his first start of the season. Marini gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking none and striking out four.
Scorpion's starter and pitching coach Rusty Meacham pitched five innings give up one run on three hits, while outfielder Juan Labron went three for five with six RBI to lead Yuma.
The Miners started their comeback in the sixth inning by scoring five runs. They went on to score four more runs in the seventh inning to take a 10-9 lead. Offensive heroes for the Miners were outfielders Adam Bonner and Caleb Maher. Bonner went three for five with four RBI and two runs scored. Maher went two for four with two home runs and three RBI.
Yuma's bullpen struggled as gusty winds came into play. Reliever Dane DelaRosa pitched one inning, giving up five runs (all earned) on five hits. Losing pitcher David Cuen (0-1) lasted only one inning as well, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits and walking two.
Mesa reliever Manny Ayala (1-0) picked up the win by pitching an impressive three shutout innings giving up just one hit.
The Miners improve their record to 2-0 while the Scorpions fall to 0-2. Game three of the four game series continues tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. RHP Jason Navarro of the Miners takes on RHP Jorge Perez.
