
Merrill wins week five Rookie of the Week award

Brodie Merrill took the National Lacrosse League's Rookie of the Week honors for a second consecutive week. Merrill scored one goal and added four assists for a total of five points and collected 27 loose balls during two games in Week Five.
As a defenseman, Merrill brings home his second honors after a strong performance in two games over the weekend (He won NLL Rookie of the Week #4). Merrill recorded two assists and collected 14 loose balls in a 15-8 road win over the San Jose Stealth on Friday. On Saturday Merrill added a goal and two assists for three points, and scooped up 13 loose balls in a 12-8 home loss to the Calgary Roughnecks.
Scott Stewart was also traded this week to Minnesota in exchange for the Swarm's Ryder Bateman. Bateman comes from Calgary, Alberta and played his rookie season for Minnesota in 2005. The 6'0", 195lb forward comes to the Jax with 39 points last year (20 goals, 19 assists). In 2005, he was tied for second among rookies in goals, and also won the Rookie of the Week honors in Week #16 last year. He was selected as a first round pick in the NLL Entry Draft (6th overall).

The Portland LumberJax (www.PortlandJax.com) were founded on May 11, 2005 as an expansion franchise in the National Lacrosse League, which features the best lacrosse players in the world.
