Merrill to represent LumberJax on Team Canada

PORTLAND, April 19, 2007 - Portland LumberJax defenseman Brodie Merrill will represent Team Canada at the 2007 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships held at the Halifax Metro Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from May 14-20. Merrill is the lone Jax player to play for Team Canada but will compete against teammates Jed Prossner, Scott Stapleford and Dwight Maetche who are representing Team USA.

"Any time you get the opportunity to represent your country, it is a huge honor," Merrill said. "For me it is the ultimate privilege to be chosen along with the best Canadian lacrosse players out there. It will be a great experience to play in Halifax and represent my country."

This week Merrill was honored as the 2007 National Lacrosse League (NLL) looseball leader after collecting 196 through 15 games. The Orangeville, Ontario native was also named a starter for the 2007 All-Star Game but was unable to play due to injury. This was the second year in a row that Merrill was named to the Western Division All-Star squad.

The Jax defenseman was honored last season as the NLL Rookie of the Year and also named to the Edge Active Care All-Rookie Team. Merrill also earned the 2006 Belmont.com Defensive Player of the Year award and collected seven Player of the Week accolades. Not only did Merrill lead the team in looseballs last year, but he also posted the highest number of assists (36), was third overall in points (53) and fourth on the team in goals-scored (17).

Last summer Merrill represented Team Canada in the 2006 International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) World Championship. Anchoring his team's defense, he was awarded the tournament's Best Defenseman award. He was also part of a defensive unit that was able to hold Team USA to 10 goals in the championship game, earning a 15-10 victory for Team Canada. The 10 goals tallied marks the fewest Team USA has ever scored in ILF play. History was also made during the tournament as the Canadians ended the Stars and Stripes' 28-year, 38-game IFL winning streak.

USA, Canada, Australia, England, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Scotland, and the Iroquois Nationals will compete at the 2007 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship which takes place from May 14-20. For more information, please visit www.usindoorlacrosse.org.
