Merlini Earns Rookie Of The Week Honors

PORT HURON, MI - Port Huron Icehawks defenseman Derek Merlini has been named International Hockey League Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, March 15, the league announced Monday.

Merlini finished Week 22 with three assists and a +3 rating in three games played. He dished out two assists in Port Huron's 9-1 win over Flint on Saturday, with one of those assists coming on the power play. On Sunday, he added another helper in the Icehawks 7-3 win over Muskegon.

The 23-year old native of Clinton Township, Michigan continues to lead the league in plus/minus with a +28 rating in 61 games played.

Merlini earns the honor for the second time this season. He was also named Rookie of the Week in Week 13.

The first place Icehawks wrap up a five game home-stand on Tuesday when the second place Fort Wayne Komets come to town. Don't miss this special St. Patrick's Day celebration. They travel to Fort Wayne on Friday and Muskegon on Saturday.
