Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

Southhaven, MS. - The Youngstown SteelHounds (20-32-5) had several leads including two separate two-goal cushions but ran out of gas as the Memphis RiverKings (20-30-3) scored three third period goals in an offensive slugfest that ended with the RiverKings capturing an 8-6 victory. Brad Wanchulak netted his first hat trick, while Jeff Christian scored two goals with an assist as the Hounds winless streak extends to seven consecutive games (0-5-2).

Just like last night's game, the Hounds started the scoring with Joey Sewell lighting the lamp for his 18th goal of the season and 16th goal in 16 games with Youngstown. The play was created by Chris Richards who dumped it into the far corner and eventually deflected in by Sewell just 49 seconds into the period. That was the only similarity between last night's game as the first period saw five goals and three fights. With the Hounds leading 1-0, Memphis scored with a long range wrist shot by Dorian Anneck that fooled Simon St. Pierre for his 15th goal of the season. Youngstown answered right back with Matt Hanson taking a face-off win and making a great effort to get to the front of the net and lift a shot over Guy St. Vincent for his ninth goal of the season. Memphis responded just over a minute later with Brad Wanchulak scoring his first goal of the season in just his third game with the RiverKings. Tied at two, the Hounds had several point blank chances against St. Vincent as players found themselves all alone in front of the Memphis cage but couldn't finish, until Jeff Christian was the player that had the puck and he connected to the tune of his 48th goal of the season. Darryl Lloyd was credited with his second assist of the night. Youngstown outshot the RiverKings 9-7 as St. Pierre stopped five shots and St. Vincent turned away six shots.

Leading 3-2 heading into the second period, the Hounds pushed their lead to two goals with Darryl Lloyd earning his third point of the night scoring his 15th goal of the season after Chris Shaffer made a great defensive play picking off a pass and feeding Lloyd on a breakaway at the 4:19 mark of the period. Memphis got one back with a power play goal by Darrell Stoddard redirecting a Derek Landmesser shot by St. Pierre for his 15th goal of the season. With the score 4-3, the Hounds scored a power play goal of their own with Sewell scoring his second goal of the night and 19th of the season, assisted by Chris Richards and Jeff Christian at the 9:58 mark. The assist for Richards extends his point streak to 17 straight games, a career high and tied for the longest point streak in the CHL this season. Memphis answered back with a pair of goals tying the score at five. The first came from Peter Robertson on the power play, his sixth goal of the season and the second from Wanchulak, his second goal of the night and season. Just one minute after the RiverKings tied the score, Christian found the back of the net for the second time in the game and moved just one goal away from the magical 50-goal mark. Sewell and Richards assisted on the Captain's 49th goal of the season at the 18:06 mark of the period. Youngstown outshot the RiverKings 14-13 in the second period and led 23-20 through 40 minutes.

The RiverKings came out flying in the final period tying the game, once again on the power play, at the 4:09 mark with Wanchulak netting the hat trick. Memphis then took the lead with Travis Banga scoring his team leading 27th goal of the season. The Hounds had chances late including two power plays in the final five minutes but ran out of gas. Chad McIver finished the game with an empty-net goal, his third goal of the season finalizing the decision.

Both teams took 30 shots on goal with the goaltenders struggling. St. Vincent won his second straight decision making 24 saves and St. Pierre took the loss stopping 22 shots.

The Hounds continue their final road trip of the season on Friday night versus the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs with face-off scheduled for 8:05 PM (EST).
