Bakersfield Blitz News Release

South Haven, MS – Newly acquired QB Michael Wall threw five touchdown passes as the Memphis Xplorers (5-5) defeated the Bakersfield Blitz (6-4) 59-31 at the De Soto Civic Center on Saturday night. Memphis swept the two-game season series with the win.

Memphis took the lead on their first possession with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Brian Jones to Kevin Prentiss. Bakersfield answered with a one-yard touchdown run by Nick Onaindia, but the point after was no good, making it 7-6. From there, they added a field goal and two touchdowns before the Blitz could add to their total, taking a 24-6 advantage midway through the second quarter.

The Blitz chipped away at the lead with a pair of late touchdown catches by Eric Mahanke, who now has at least one touchdown reception in every game this season. Prentiss added another touchdown catch, this time from QB Michael Wall, who replaced an injured Jones late in the half. Memphis held the lead 30-19 at halftime.

Bakersfield opened the second half with a 45-yard drive, concluded by Onaindia's second touchdown run of the game to make it 30-25. Memphis added two more touchdowns by Prentiss in the third quarter, however, one of them coming off a fumbled kickoff return by Bakersfield.

The Blitz were held scoreless on their next two drives, including an interception by Chad Elliott in the endzone, giving it back to the Xplorers. They added a touchdown to make it 51-25, while Bakersfield answered with a touchdown run by Ben McCombs. Wall then tossed his fifth touchdown pass of the game for good measure, converting a two-point conversion as well, for the final score to make it 59-31.
