HIGHLIGHTS
- The defense turned in its best performance of training camp on Monday. CB Jonathan Cook (Memphis) set the tone early with a pass break-up on the first play of 11-on-11 work.
- CB Juwan Offray (Louisiana-Monroe) kept it rolling in 7-on-7s with an interception off a tipped ball on the right sideline.
- WR Chris Givens (Wake Forest) made the morning's best catch, securing a reception on the left sideline while landing on his back.
- Goal line offense started with a touchdown grab by TE Cordon Moog (Baylor) on a QB Brandon Silvers (Troy) rollout. The defense stiffened from there on, limiting the offense to four touchdowns on 12 snaps. DL Johnny Maxey (Mars Hill) and DL Latarius Brady (Memphis) combined for a four-yard tackle-for-loss on the sixth play. LB Andrew Jackson (Western Kentucky) stuffed a QB draw. LB Colton Jumper (Tennessee) and CB Jonathan Cook (Memphis) both broke up passes.
- K Josh Jasper (Louisiana State) connected on all four field goal attempts, the first two from 20 yards out and the second pair from 27.
- LB DeMarquis Gates (Ole Miss) used his left hand to break up a pass up the seam during the second period of 11-on-11 work.
QUOTES
- Head Coach Mike Singletary on efficiency at the goal line: "I want our offense and defense to be on par down there. We fumbled the ball on offense. We can't get down to the goal line, about to punch it over, and fumble the ball. We have some work to do. We have to press the point of ball security and continue to work on our technique."
- Head Coach Mike Singletary on returning to practice after two days off: "I saw that they were rested. Earlier in practice, a little bit aloof. We got them back and toward the end of practice got back on track. We're getting there, a step at a time."
- LB Dale Warren (Chattanooga) on today's strong performance from the defense: "As a unit, we're getting better everyday. We still have little pointers to fix here and there, but as a unit we're going forward. We're making good progress and doing our thing right now."
- LB Dale Warren (Chattanooga) on the competition at linebacker: "The competition is great. We're all ball players. We have great athletes. We're all here competing for a job. The main thing is to be consistent, to make more plays, and avoid mistakes."
- CB Justin Martin (Tennessee) on the defense's performance Monday: "I'm seeing a lot of guys coming together as one. I'm seeing our linebackers getting more communication around to the whole defense. Our defensive line is putting more pressure on the quarterbacks. We're becoming one as a group and that helps us a lot on the field."
- CB Justin Martin (Tennessee) on the coaches' message to the team after practice: "The message from the coaches was we need to come out here and work every day. Every single day, guys are coming out here to work and stay on top of their assignment. No one wants to be the one to fall behind and put the rest of their group behind. Everybody's taking accountability for the next man."
