Boston Breakers News Release

NEEDHAM, MA (June 14, 2003) - Boston Breakers forward Dagny Mellgren has been selected as the WUSA's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending June 13, 2003. Mellgren had three goals, the first hat trick in Breakers history, in Boston's 3-1 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday, July 13 at Nickerson Field. The win gave the Breakers sole possession of second place in the WUSA standings with a 7-4-4 record for 25 points.

It was Mellgren's seventh multiple-goal game in three years with the Breakers. She is now the WUSA's all-time leader in goals scored with 32.

The Norwegian striker is now tied with teammate Maren Meinert and Philadelphia's Marinette Pichon for the WUSA league leading scorers with 22 points. It also ties her with Pichon for league leading goals scored with 10. Mellgren is now just three points shy of the 75-point milestone.

Mellgren, 25, opened the night on a sweet goal in the 16th minute as she latched onto a through ball from Mary-Frances Monroe and placed it by a diving Charge goalkeeper Melissa Moore. The second goal was easy as Mellgren waited for Meinert to place a cross perfectly in the middle of the box for her to head by Moore for a 2-0 lead in the first half.

The final goal came in the 65th minute when Mellgren ran onto a pass from countrywoman Ragnhild Gulbrandsen. Gulbrandsen fought off two players to slide the ball to the left of Moore onto the foot of an open Mellgren. All Mellgren did was run onto the ball and place it past the rushing goalkeeper into the far post for a 3-0 lead.

For the Breakers, Mellgren is the fourth player from Boston to be named Player of the Week by the league. The other three include: Karina LeBlanc, Maren Meinert and Angela Hucles. This is Mellgren's fourth time in three years that Mellgren has been named Player of the Week.

Boston's next match is on Saturday, July 19 against the first place Atlanta Beat team. Fans can purchase tickets by calling 1-866-GO BREAKERS or visit www.bostonbreakers.com.
