RiverCity Rage News Release
St. Charles, MO - The RiverCity Rage are pleased to announce that former St. Louis Cardinal receiver, Mel Gray, will be attending the Rage tryout this Saturday at the Jamestown Sports Complex in Florissant. Gray, a four-time Pro Bowl receiver, will be on hand to assist the Rage coaches in the evaluation of all of the prospective players. However, his main focus will be, not surprisingly, on the receivers.
"There are a lot of receivers that can run 4.3 (seconds) in the forty yard dash," said Gray. "The problem is most of them can't catch. So I see if I can help this player to catch the ball, or this one to run better routes. Sometimes the best thing for the guy is to move to another position, maybe on defense."
Gray played in St. Louis for the football Cardinals for 12 seasons from 1971-'82 after playing for the Missouri Tigers for three seasons in college. Gray's most productive years were under the coaching of Don Coryell. Gray appeared in four straight Pro Bowls from 1974-'77 during the "Air Coryell" years. He is currently coaching high school football and track in Rockford, IL.
"Playing in St. Louis was great," Gray said. "What a wonderful sports town. We had a great team with coach Coryell. We still get together - Dan Deirdorf, Jim Hart, Roger Wehrli and everyone. We're still a real tight knit group. As the years go by the stories, and the lies, get better."
Gray will be available for interviews at the Jamestown Sports Complex the day of the tryout. The tryout will begin with registration at 2:00 with the workout starting at 3:00. Please contact Aaron McCreight at the number provided above for scheduling.
