Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- Sioux Falls Stampede forward, John McNelis, has been named to the 2023-2024 All-USHL Rookie Second Team, as announced by the USHL on Wednesday morning.
McNelis marked the seventh highest point total on the Stampede roster during his rookie season, tallying 38 total points. The Boston University commit earned 18 goals and 20 assists for the Herd in his 62 games. Of these 18 goals, three were game-winning goals and two came on the powerplay. Last season, McNelis came in as an affiliate for three games in December and January, earning his first USHL assist against the Omaha Lancers on Jan. 28, 2023. During this season's USHL Clark Cup Playoffs, McNelis netted one goal in three games with six shots on goal.
"We are extremely excited for John," said Stampede General Manager and Vice President of Hockey Operations Tony Gasparini. "It is great to see him be rewarded for his daily commitment to development this past season. We expect him to be an integral part of the group's success moving into next season."
This season, McNelis marked a pair of two-goal games and a handful of multi-point games. He earned two goals on a road trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Dec. 5, 2023, then did the same while hosting Team USA NTDP on Jan. 11, 2024. During both of these games, McNelis also tabbed an assist, totaling three points for each game. He would tally three points in one more game on Mar, 23, 2024 against the Lincoln Stars with a goal and two assists.
McNelis was drafted to the Stampede affiliate list during the second round of the 2022 Phase I USHL Draft. Hailing from Potomac, Maryland, the 2006 forward played with the Long Island Gulls 16U program in the NEPACK for the majority of the 2022-23 season.
