Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
BOARDMAN, Ohio (Friday, March 14, 2008) - It took all eight rounds of a shootout before Brian McGinty sealed the Mahoning Valley Phantoms' 4-3 comeback win over the Traverse City North Stars on Friday night in front of nearly 700 fans at the Ice Zone.
After a two week break, it appeared that the North Stars had not missed a single beat as they came out firing in the first period. Kyle Bonis scored twice and Eric McLintock added a third, to stake Traverse City out to a 3-0 lead through 20 minutes.
The Phantoms then turned to the powerplay to get things started in the second period. North Division Player of the Week honorable mention Kyle Bailey backhanded home his fifth of the season to pull the Phantoms within two.
Just 58 seconds later, Stefan Salituro scored his first of the night when he converted the rebound of Miles Winter shot, cutting the lead to one.
Salituro then tallied his second of the night, and his tenth of the season, 6:47 into the final frame to complete the comeback and set the stage for the overtime and the shootout.
Mahoning Valley (31-17-4, 66 points) outshot the Stars 44-19 for the game. Jordan Tibbett, in relief of starter Garrett Bartus, earned his ninth win of the season with 12 saves on 13 shots.
Coupled with a 4-3 Alpena loss to the Marquette Rangers, the Phantoms moved five points clear of the Ice Diggers in the race for second place in the North American Hockey League's North division standings.
Traverse City (21-19-12, 54 points) and Mahoning Valley face off again Saturday night at 7:15 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Ice Zone in Boardman. The Phantoms will be wearing special edition, green St. Patrick's Day jerseys that will be auctioned off to fans during and after the games.
