
McDonald Hits Third Homer in Loss to Quakes

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - Coming off a high-scoring series at High Desert, the JetHawks' pitching staff worked through high pitch counts Monday night, falling to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 13-8 at LoanMart Field.
Edison Frias (2-1) struggled in the first inning for Lancaster (6-6), yielding six runs on five hits. Tyler Brunnemann entered in relief and gave up an additional run on three hits, allowing Rancho Cucamonga (9-3) an early 7-0 lead.
After a leadoff walk to A.J. Reed in the top of the second, Chase McDonald homered to right-center field off Quakes starter John Richy to make the score 7-2.
McDonald added an RBI single in the top of the third, and Brett Phillips hit a two-RBI triple to score McDonald and J.D.
Davis, who singled. Jose Fernandez capped off the rally with a single to score Phillips and bring the JetHawks to within one run.
But the game got away from the JetHawks in the bottom of the sixth, as tandem starter Brian Holmes committed two errors and allowed six runs on three hits and a walk, giving the Quakes a 13-6 advantage.
Rancho Cucamonga reliever Rob Rogers allowed the JetHawks a run each in the both the seventh and eighth innings, throwing wild pitches with a runner on third in both frames.
Jacob Rhame struck out three consecutive batters in the ninth, handing Lancaster a second straight loss.
Victor Araujo (1-1) earned the win for Rancho Cucamonga after tossing three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
The JetHawks will face the Quakes in the second game of the series Tuesday at LoanMart Field. Michael Feliz (1-1, 7.11) will start for Lancaster, and Rancho Cucamonga will send Zack Bird (2-0, 2.70) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
