Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Sudbury Wolves hopes of defeating the Majors in the Eastern Conference Semi Final took a big blow tonight as they fell 6-3 to the Majors at the Hershey Centre. With the win, the Majors now lead the series 3-0.
It was clear both teams were ready to battle from the drop of the puck; the physical play was obvious as both teams were trying to use their weight as much as possible. After a massive hit by Devante Smith Pelly in the Wolves end, the Majors tallied the first goal off a shot by Jordan Mayer who flicked home a pass from Maxim Kitsyn who was behind the net at 5:31. Just 30 seconds after, Marcus Foligno knocked over Stuart Percy of the Majors and centre Rob Flick took exception and dropped the mitts in a viscous fight between the two heavyweights. No love was lost as each continued to harp on each other after the fight. Later in the period, Jordan Mayer was getting out of the box after serving a cross checking penalty when he received a hail mary pass from defenseman Marc Cantin that sprung him on a breakaway. Mayer made no mistake as he just had enough time to snap one 5-hole on Alain Valiquette before the defender caught up. The Majors out shot the Wolves 18-9 and had a 2-0 lead after the first.
The Majors began the second right where they left off, as Riley Brace drove hard to the net, Rob Flick cut into the middle and shot past Brace, into the top corner. The goal was just 3:51 into the period. Sudbury quickly got themselves back in the game with a goal from Frank Schumacher who came in alone placed a shot just over J.P. Anderson's shoulder to get the Wolves on the board. The Wolves then pulled within one on a powerplay goal from Eric O'Dell. A very nice tic-tac-toe play from Andrey Kuchin and Mike Lomas found O'Dell wide open to slide it in and pull the Wolves to within one. Just as it looked like the Wolves were mounting their comeback, the Majors turned things around. After a steal down low by Casey Cizikas he slid the puck over to Justin Shugg and Shugg slid a backhand past Valiquette while dragging a Wolves player on his back. Shugg's fourth goal of the playoffs restored the two goal lead for the Majors. Shots at the end of two were 34-17 in favour of the Majors.
Only one minute into the third, the Wolves had again cut the lead back to one goal on a goal scored by Leivo, from Lomas. This goal got the Wolves right back in the game and possibly could have sparked a Sudbury comeback, but it seemed to have more of an effect on the Majors. The Majors played the remainder of the third period in defensive mode, and held the Wolves to only four shots in the entire 3rd period. At 11:25, Maxim Kitsyn put a shot over Valiquette's shoulder to add an insurance marker. Jordan Mayer recorded his third point of the night with the lone assist. The Wolves pulled the goalie in a final attempt at a comeback but Corey Bureau killed all hopes by putting it in the vacant net. The Majors skated to a 6-3 victory and now take a commanding three games to none lead.
JP Anderson got the start in net for the Majors and made 18 saves on 21 shots in the victory. Alain Valiquette was busy in net for the Wolves once again, making 39 saves on 44 shots. The games three stars were Leivo (3rd), Kitsyn (2nd) and Mayer (1st).
Game four goes Wednesday night in Sudbury at 7:30 PM. The game can be seen on Rogers TV Peel Region or heard on The Haze FM.ca. If necessary, the series will shift back to Mississauga for game five on Friday night at the Hershey Centre. Tickets are available now for that game at the Hershey Centre box office, or by calling ticketmaster.ca.
Earlier this week, the Majors announced that a block of 500 red level tickets were being released for round robin games and the semi final at the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup. Tickets will go on sale Monday morning at 10:00 AM through the Hershey Centre box office or at ticketmaster.ca.
