Mavs Crush Takers Yet Again

The Southeast Texas Mavericks opened the game with Houston Takers on an 8-0 run and never looked back on Saturday night at their home arena, the Ford Arena in Beaumont, TX.

Bookend Wings Josh Pace and Jermaine Blackburn each scored baskets to start off the scoring for the Mavericks. The rest of the Mavs starters Herman Favors, Alex Sanders and Jon Rogers all scored within the first four minutes of the game as SETX raced out to a twenty point lead and led 34-14 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second period the Mavericks emptied their bench and built their lead to 30 points midway through the 2nd quarter. Pace, Blackburn, Favors, and Currye Todd continued their assault on the Takers and went in at halftime up 76-37.

To open the second half the Mavericks unveiled their own "Twin Towers" look as Jon Rogers and newcomer DeSean White played together for the first time. The two big men dominated the paint as the Mavs built their lead to over 40 points. Heading into the final period of play the Mavericks led 105-71.

The Mavericks kept pushing the basketball and tempo as they ran out to a huge 50 point lead midway through the final period. Todd, Mike Crain, and Kenny Dawkins kept the attack of the Takers coming as the unrelenting pressure of Southeast Texas continued to prove too much for Houston. The Mavericks finished the game strong on back to back dunks by Lamar Sanders and Avery Percival. The Mavericks grabbed their 18th victory of the season with a 149-98 win!

MAVS SCORERS:

The SETX Mavericks again had balanced scoring as they placed 8 players in double figures. Jermaine Blackburn once again led the Mavs in scoring with 24 points. Long ranger bomber Currye Todd continued his hot shooting by adding 21 points on 7 three pointers. Herman Favors had 19 points/13 assist and continued his stellar play at the point guard position for the Mavs. League MVP candidate Josh Pace nearly had a triple double with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assist. Alex Sanders and Jon Rogers each chipped in 12 points. Rogers also pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked 5 shots. Anthony Lumpkin followed up with 11 points respectively. The Houston Takers were led in scoring by Danny Brown's 24 points. Larry Posey added 21 points.

MAVS SUPERLATIVES:

With the win on Saturday night over the Houston Takers the SETX Mavericks collected their 30th win in two seasons at Ford Arena. The Mavs hold a 30-2 all-time record at Ford Arena in their two seasons of calling the Ford Arena their home.

The #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mavericks have held the #1 ranking in the ABA Power Rankings for an Amazing 17 of the past 21 weeks in ABA Regular Season Play. No One has ever dominated the ABA Power Rankings since the Power Rankings started at the start of the 2004-05 season in this way. With the Mavericks obviously holding on to the #1 ranking after tonight's dominate win over Houston the Mavs will be #1 in the ABA Power Rankings for the 18th week in the past two seasons. "GO MAVERICKS!!!"

MAVS NEXT GAME:

The Mavericks will play the last game of this homestand on Monday night at Ford Arena vs the Mississippi Blues. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
