Mavericks to Play at Portsmouth

December 10, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Seacoast Mavericks News Release

The Seacoast Mavericks, a member of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England (FCBL) reached an agreement with the City of Portsmouth to play their 2013 home schedule at historic Leary Field, located in downtown Portsmouth, NH.

With its iconic wood grandstand reminiscent of classic old-time baseball, Leary Field has a rich history and tradition for hosting the Seacoast area's top athletes. Originally home to the Portsmouth Baseball Club and the powerhouse Atlantic Corporation league in the late 1800s, Leary Field also played host to the Sunset League, the oldest amateur baseball league in the country.

Serving as the home for the Portsmouth Middle School baseball teams, Portsmouth Babe Ruth and American Legion Booma Post 6 Baseball organizations, Leary Field will provide another opportunity for the outstanding local collegiate baseball players to hone their talents in front of family and friends.

Mike Daboul, President of the Seacoast Mavericks, indicated that the move to Portsmouth will be a win-win situation for all involved. "Last year our organization was able to play a handful of games at Leary Field. It was amazing to see how the collegiate baseball players responded to the environment that Leary provides. Whether talking with the younger fans from the dug-outs, or seeing the lighted steeple of the North Church over the center field fence, Leary Field is an amazing place to play and watch a baseball game".

Dave Hoyt, principal and founder of the Seacoast Mavericks and owner of the USA Training Center and the USA Mavericks Baseball Club, a youth program that supports over 120 baseball players in six age divisions, U12 through U18, stated, "As the attendance at the games played at Leary Field during the 2012 season easily surpassed the turnout the Seacoast Mavericks received at Bert George Field in Rochester, NH, the decision to reach out to the city to relocate the collegiate team was an easy one. But in calling Leary Field our new home, we wanted to demonstrate how vested we were in this opportunity. As a result we have committed to over $30,000 of improvements and upgrades to Leary Field for the 2013 season. These improvements will provide a better playing environment for all of the teams that call Leary home."

The City of Portsmouth is equally optimistic about the move. After having learned of the relocation to Leary Field, Portsmouth Mayor Eric Spear said, I'm excited the Seacoast Mavericks have decided to play in Portsmouth. Summer and baseball together in Portsmouth are a perfect combination. The first game can't come soon enough!"

That sentiment was also echoed by Portsmouth Recreation and Athletic Director Rus Wilson. "We are very pleased to have the Seacoast Mavericks playing their home games at Leary Field in Portsmouth this coming season. They are a class organization that will add to the rich history of great baseball teams in Portsmouth."

In addition to the news of relocating to Leary Field in Portsmouth, NH, the Seacoast Mavericks are also excited to announce their first pre-season event, a Hot Stove Dinner and Silent Auction headlined by the Boston Red Sox's Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Durham, NH native and Tampa Bay outfielder Sam Fuld. The banquet will take place on January 25, 2013 at the Residence Inn's Harbor Events center. VIP sponsorships are available and will include access to the team's private suite for photos and autographs with Saltalamacchia and Fuld. Tickets are now on sale for $80 with private tables of 10 available for $700. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. with dinner served at 7:00 p.m. and a live auction to follow. There will also be a silent auction ongoing throughout the evening.

The Seacoast Mavericks are a 501(c) (3) collegiate wood bat summer baseball team that competes in a minor league format as members of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL). Our 30 player roster consists primarily of New England athletes currently playing college baseball at the Division I, II, or III levels.  These players will be under the watchful eye of professional baseball scouts with the hope of being selected in Major League Baseball's amateur draft.
