Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release
The SETX Mavericks (8-1) cruised to a 132-91 victory on division rival the Texas Fuel (1-5) on Saturday night at the Ford Arena in Beaumont, TX.
Reigning ABA MVP DeRon Rutledge continued to return to form with 8 first quarter points. Mavericks guard Jermaine Blackburn added 7 points in the opening quarter as the Mavs scored 45 first quarter points to open up a 24 point lead over the Fuel.
In the second quarter Josh Pace and Alex Sanders got into action as the Mavericks opened up a 30 point lead. Newly acquired Herman Favors added the spark at the point guard that the Mavs have been needing all season. Anthony Lumpkin teamed at the point guard position with Favors and the two played flawlessly on this night as the Mavericks led at half-time 66-39.
In the third period of play the Mavericks came out and opened up a 40 point margin on the Fuel and mid-way through the third stanza the Mavs cleared their bench. Keith Simpson, Lamar Sanders, and Donnie Jackson played quality minutes for SETX.
The last quarter of action remained the same with the Mavericks getting stronger as the game went along. In the end the Mavs rolled to a 41 point victory!
MAVERICKS SCORING:
The Mavericks placed 8 players in double figures. Very balanced scoring and team play has been the Mavs trademark throughout this season thus far. Jermaine Blackburn continued his MVP caliber play for the SETX Mavericks with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assist on the night. Frontline players Jon Rogers and DeRon Rutledge scored 15 points a piece. Rogers also pulled down a game high 11 rebounds and blocked 3 shots. Wings Keith Simpson and Mike Crain each added 14 points. Josh Pace and Alex Sanders contributed 11 and 10 points respectively.
Mavericks Superlatives:
The Mavericks extended their 23 game homecourt win streak at Ford Arena over the last two seasons. The Mavs are now ranked #2 in the ABA Power Rankings trailing only the Music City Stars (6-1). The Stars and Mavericks will match-up for the second time this season in Nashville, TN on Thursday night of this upcoming week. It will be the second time these two powerful teams will play this season. The SETX Mavericks defeated the Stars earlier this season in the finals of the ABA Tip-off Classic as the Mavs battled from behind to take a 114 -111 hard fought victory. Round two between these to teams should be quite a classic in Nashville.
Mavericks Notes:
Mavs center Jon Rogers is averaging 14.4 ppg, 13.5 rpg, and 4.3 blocked shots per game on the season thus far for the SETX Mavericks.
Jermaine Blackburn continues to impress for the Mavericks this season and is receiving some NBA looks for his stellar play!
The Mavericks signed former Georgia State University point guard Herman Favors for the remainder of this season. Favors is a veteran pro point guard and was playing in Finland earlier this season.
Johnny "Spiderman" Tyson has come out of retirement and is now playing his 16th season as a professional basketball player. Tyson is the oldest player playing in the ABA at 38 years young! He has played in the NBA for five teams during his basketball career. Tyson was the 1994 USBL Rookie of the Year and has been All-Pro in several different pro basketball leagues both in the USA and abroad over the course of his long basketball career.
Mavericks Next Game:
The Mavericks leave for their longest road trip of the season on Monday. The Mavs will be on the road for eight days. The Mavericks will travel to Lexington, KY to take on the Bluegrass Stallions. The Mavs will travel to Nashville, TN, where they will play the #1 ranked Bluegrass Stars. The final leg of the trip will be in Owensboro, KY, where the Mavs will take on the defending ABA Champs, the Kentucky Bisons in two games on Saturday and Sunday.
The SETX Mavericks next home game will be on Thursday night, January 14th at Ford Arena vs the North Texas Fresh! Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
